Blocking the mysterious number didn’t do anything. The next morning Nadia woke up to two messages from a new number. She blocked that number too, only to get three more messages within an hour. After Amelia left for school, she got dressed and headed to the police station. They had to be able to help her. There had to be some way they could figure out who was doing this and stop them.

She waited to speak to a detective for almost an hour, and it took less than five minutes for her hope to be completely crushed.

“I’m sorry, but there’s really nothing we can do about this,” he said, sliding the phone back across the table to her.

“What do you mean there’s nothing you can do?” Nadia asked incredulously.

“It’s text messages, and I get that they are making you uncomfortable, but that isn’t a crime.”

“Harassment is a crime. So is stalking.”

“I don’t really think this qualifies as either one of those,” the detective said.

“How could you possibly say that? I just showed you four messages with distinct threats in them.”

“One asked if he would need to lock you up. One asked how long you thought you could handle being blindfolded. And two mentioned waiting for you to be alone.”

“Yes, thank you for the recap,” Nadia said sarcastically. “How can you see that and say it isn’t harassment?”

“Honestly, to me, it sounds like something else.”

Nadia was disgusted by the implication, and somehow it was even more skin-crawling because the detective couldn’t even bring himself to say the words.

“You think I’m enjoying this? That this is some sort of kinky sex game?”

“I’m just saying, there isn’t anything in those messages that is directly threatening you. I get that unwanted messages are annoying…”

“And illegal.”

“In extreme circumstances. It has only been a couple of weeks and a handful of messages and phone calls. You said yourself, you don’t recognize the number, and there’s a strong possibility we wouldn’t be able to identify the person anyway. Somebody swapping numbers that fast is using burner phones or text apps. Right now, the best thing you could do is just wait for it to blow over. Keep blocking the number if you keep getting texts. Don’t answer if he calls.”

“That’s it?” Nadia asked.

“If anything else happens, feel free to call,” the detective said.

“So I need to wait until I am actually physically harmed before you’ll take any of this seriously?” she said. “Outstanding. Way to protect and serve.”

She got up angrily and stormed out of the police station. She was shaking and felt tears stinging in the corners of her eyes. She went in for help, and not only did they not take her seriously, but the detective had all but mocked her. It was infuriating and deeply disheartening.

Nadia was glad about the busy shift that evening at the old store. More customers were coming in than usual, but she welcomed it every time the door opened. It meant somebody else was inside the store with her. It was good to see a few familiar faces of people she used to talk to when working there.
